Tribes are important — where’s mine?

“A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea.” Seth Godin

We know that we are better together. We know that being around like-minded people provides validation and confidence. Tribes make us feel safe. Our tribes give us the courage and fortitude to face opposing views and beliefs and really listen. Our tribes allow us to grow.

Human beings are not meant to be solitary creatures; in fact there have been numerous scientific studies recently on the negative effects of loneliness. According to the former surgeon general, loneliness has been found to be associated with a reduction of life span. The reduction in life span [for loneliness] is similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and it’s greater than the impact on life span of obesity.

Benefits of finding your tribe:

  • Validation
  • Confidence
  • Safety
  • Courage
  • Fortitude
  • Growth

Consequence of not finding your tribe:

  • You could die sooner (you read the study!)

Okay…so I’m looking out into the darkness for my tribe and I’m seeing no sign of light. What if there is no-one else out there like me? What if I’m alone?

If there’s one thing I know, there is always someone else like you looking for the same tribe.

How do I find them?

They are all around you. They are watching and waiting, just like you.

How do I find my tribe leader in the darkness?

Finding your tribe is as simple as lighting a match. Now you see them and they can see YOU.

But I’m not a leader…I want to be part of a community but I don’t know how to lead one.

Leadership is a funny thing. It’s not about having an extraordinary gift. It’s not about being the best speaker, having the most friends or being the smartest person in the room.

A leader is someone who lights a match.

By lighting a match you are connecting people, giving them hope and a place to share their thoughts, ideas and talents. Eventually other tribes see your light and join you. Unexpected leadership starts with initiative and the deep desire to be a part of something greater. Unexpected leaders grow with the role or pass the flame; but they are leaders nonetheless.

Light a match — Find your tribe — Lead.
